Refugees in the 20th and 21st centuries

Refugees in the 20th and 21st centuries

The aim of the course (Seminar) is to examine the refugee issue starting from the emergence of the refugee as a distinct social figure in the interwar period, the creation of the legal category (status) of the refugee in 1951, to the present day. The issue of refugees is analyzed and situated in specific historical, social and political contexts, such as the empires’ collapse and the formation of nation states, the two world wars, the civil wars (Spain and Greece), the Cold War period, the national liberation/ anti-colonial struggles, the dictatorial regimes, the recent imperialist wars and invasions. We also focus on the responses at international level (international organizations, conventions, pacts) as well as national level (states, organizations, citizens) that are encountered over the years.
