Age and Social Policy

Age and Social Policy

The course aims to examine how western societies "discover" the distinct age categories - childhood, youth, old age - and attribute to each of them particular characteristics and specific needs. In this context, the focus is on age categories as historical, social and cultural constructs as well as on the planning and the implementation of social policies over time. We also study the concept of generation, the ways that intergenerational relations are conceptualized, experienced and expressed in different historical, social and political contexts.
