History of Social Policy

This course examines the basic dimensions of social question and the forms that social policy takes in the context of modern Western societies after the French Revolution, the rise of the industrial Revolution and the development of urban areas. It looks at the tranformation from the medieval concept of poverty and social relief to the dominance of liberalism in the 19th century. It also considers the socialist ideology, the emergence of trade-unions, the labour movement, philanthropy, social reform, the first insurance, the demands of women for the right to work, the first legal rights of women and finally the prisons.
