Health Economics

The course aims at understanding the relationships developed between the financial system and the health care system, the peculiarities of supply and demand in health sector, to gain a deeper understanding of the special features, basic principles, evolution of health expenditure as well as the techniques and methods of managing Health care Units.  It also seeks to critically approximate the components of health care systems, as well as the organization, funding and reform trends of health systems. The course also deals with the methods of evaluating health systems, the organization, operation, financing of health care units, the hospital costs, as well as the internal control systems of health care units. The course structure refers to the following parts: (a) theoretical dimension of health economics and their scope, (b) financing mechanisms of health services and the financial sustainability of health care systems (c) organization and typology of health systems and the importance of their performance measurement, (d) impact of the economic crisis in the health care systems globally and the Greek health care system as well as (e) necessity of economic evaluation in health systems - setting priorities and decision making in health sector.
