Social problems and implementation of social programs

The course aims to provide newcomers with the knowledge needed to understand the role of social policy in addressing social problems as well as the effects of different social policy programs in different economic, political, cultural and technological environments

The content of the course focuses on the following key-points:

  • Basic concepts of social policy (reciprocity, solidarity, redistribution, social justice, efficiency, equality, reproduction).
  • Social problems and social needs (key features-kinds-perceptions)
  • Widely used methods for analyzing social problems and identifying social needs
  • Basic methods to address social problems from the social policy dimension (regulations-redistribution-social rights-programs-services)
  • Social Policy Institutions and Programs in Late Capitalism (Insurance Programs vs. Social Assistance Programs)
  • Key steps in developing and implementing Social Programs 
  • Basic techniques for the effective management of Social Programs
  • The role of social policy staff (bureaucrats-professionals-volunteers)
  • Rules, standards and eligibility norms in social programs
