European identity in Greece: relationship with the national identity, mechanism of establishment, perspectives

Description

In our research we study the mechanisms of the establishment and functioning of European identity in Greece, focusing particularly on the period of the current economic crisis. We confirm that the economic crisis has significantly affected the European identity in Greece and attributes to its weakness, while at the same time reinforces national identity. Following the methodology of critical analysis with reference to the literature, in the first part we focus on the national identity and examine the basic mechanisms of the construction of modern Greek identity. In the second part, the research focuses on the mechanisms of European identity formation and critically analyzes European and Greek researches on the European identity of Greeks. We thus verify the working hypothesis that European identity in Greece remains at a low level and needs to be strengthened.
