Urban geography

The course aims to introduce students to basic concepts and methodological approaches of urban geography; study of the urban phenomenon and the urbanization processes; analysis of the structure and function of the city; social theories of urbanization- the ecological approach of the Chicago School. In particular, the formation and development of the industrial city; types and phenomena of urbanization in the less developed world; the deindustrialization crisis and new urban economies; postmodern urbanization and the challenges of sustainable urban development are studied. Finally, the course deals in detail with the processes and phenomena of urbanization in Greece.
