Education and Social Policy

The aim of the course is to introduce students to the basic sociological approaches to the relation between education and society. To this purpose, a number of theoretical approaches are presented: E. Durkheim’s approach, structural functionalism and T. Parson’s approach, the Marxist analysis of education and the theories of direct reproduction through the works of S. Bowles & H. Gintis, P. Bourdieu & J.C. Passeron and B. Bernstein, the Marxist analysis of education and the theories of resistance, relative autonomy and voluntarism through the works of M. Apple, H. Giroux και P. Willis, the Weberian approach to the relation between education and society through the works of M. Archer, R. Collins and R. Turner. Finally, the link between education policy and social policy is approached and the aim of “equal educational opportunities” is explored in the light of the different sociological approaches.
